Cataract Surgery Austin TX

What are Cataracts?

Cataracts are essentially a clouding of the eye's natural lens. This lens is responsible for focusing light on the retina and for adjusting the eye's focus. Most cataracts are a result of the breakdown of proteins in the eye. Certain genetic factors can cause cataracts and may also play a role in predisposing someone to developing cataracts. The odds of a person developing cataracts as they age is very good - roughly half of people between 65 and 74 have some cataract formation, with that number rising to 70% in people over 75.

Cataract Surgery and Treatment

As cataracts progress, they will eventually start to impair vision enough to make normal day-to-day tasks difficult, if not impossible. At this point, cataract surgery becomes the best option. Cataract surgery is the most common surgery in the United States…it is mostly painless and has a very high rate of success.

The most common way to fix cataracts is to remove the clouded natural lens and replace it with a new lens made of plastic, known as an intraocular lens (IOL) implant. Most clients are able to return to their normal activities the day after their procedure. New technology in IOL implants is being developed constantly, making results far better and giving cataract clients exciting new choices in vision correction. Cataract clients now have the opportunity to eliminate or greatly reduce their dependence on reading glasses, bifocals, or even trifocal lenses with the use of monofocal IOLs or multifocal IOLs (such as Tecnis®, ReStor®, ReZoom™, etc. lenses).

If cataracts are impairing your vision, schedule a Free Screening with our cataract surgeon, Dr. L. Shawn Wong, M.D., and find out how you may be able to achieve visual freedom! through cataract surgery.
